Video games in general put you in the shoes of the good guy, or at the very least a semi-morally conscious anti-hero.
But all of that goody-two-shoes mentality gets thrown out the window when someone threatens to steal a hard hour’s work of farming materials in Rust.
The game is still being created by Facepunch, a video game developer based in Walsall, England.
Their second game after the surprisingly successful Garry’s Mod, Rust is a survival game that pits you against man, nature, and animals.
Never has a game instilled in me such a necessity to shoot on sight to protect myself.
You are spawned randomly in the map, and given a rock, a torch, and some bandages. That’s it. No clothes, no food, no nothing.
You start off having to whack trees, piles of logs and stones lying around so you can build and craft better tools and clothes.
Then you can beat and chop more things. The chopping and whacking, it never ends.
During this time you’ll run into wild animals that would love to chase you for the next mile.
All the barking gives away your position, which is very bad.
It’s bad because other people are the scariest adversaries in this game.
I’ve spent days crafting and farming enough materials to make myself a pretty new rifle, only to have it stolen from my dead corpse because some random player shot me as I was hacking on some logs.
You get paranoid. Fast.
To combat all those suspicious people, you can build a fort! You build up defenses, hide all your gear inside it, and when you quit, you can leave in peace.
Oh, that’s right. When you disconnect from the server, your character goes to sleep right where you were just standing. So be careful where you log-out or some passerby will steal all your stuff.
So two biggest lessons in Rust, always close your doors, — always — always — always and never trust anyone.
