Wake Forest firemen fry fish Friday

by Carol Pelosi, Wake Weekly Editor

If the restaurants in town have slim pickings around noon Friday, that is because the lunch bunch knows where to find the best food.

That will be at Wake Forest Fire Station Number 1 on Elm Avenue where the firemen are serving up fried flounder plates.

For $6, you can get a generous plate of delicious fried fish, cole slaw, potatoes and hush puppies plus a drink.

Then let your sweet tooth lead you to the table where the firemen's family members and supporters are selling plate after plate of pies, cakes and all sorts of yummy delicacies. "We do want donations of baked goods" for the sale, Chief Jimmy Keith said. They can be delivered to the fire station Thursday night or during the day Friday.

You can eat in or take out, and orders of 20-plus plates will be delivered, but no drinks are included in the delivered orders, Keith said. Call 556-1966 to put in your order.

Members of the Junior Civitan Club at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School will be pitching in to help with the cooking and plates.

"The lines may look long," Keith said, "but it will be a 15- to 20-minute wait at most."

On your way in the door you can stop to buy $1 tickets for the raffle. Actually, the tickets are on sale now at the station and will be on sale until 3:30 p.m. May 4 during Meet in the Street, when the drawing will be held.

The prizes for lucky winners include

Keith said the firemen hope to clear $20,000 from the fish fry, bake sale and raffle, which is about what they used to clear running two fish fries every year. The money will be used for fire department operations, he said, but it is not yet committed to any project.
