SBI investigating Tommy
Wynne
by Colleen Lowry, Wake Weekly Staff Writer
District Attorney Sam Currin confirmed Monday
that Franklin County Commissioner George "Tommy" Wynne has
been under investigation by the State Bureau of
Investigation.
Currin said the investigation of the land deal concerning
a Lake Royale lot has been ongoing since the resolution of
the Donnie Rudd matter in January.
Wynne has been accused of obtaining a deed for land
intended to be deeded to the county and sold at auction.
Instead, he sold the property and kept the profits.
Wynne released a statement Monday in which he apologized
to his family and Franklin County citizens for putting
himself in a position where his honesty and integrity are
questioned.
He stated that he "did not realize the lot was intended
to be deeded to Franklin County" and fully intends to pay
back the county as soon as possible.
Wynne said he welcomes the investigation "because I feel
confident it will clear me and show I have not violated any
criminal laws."
He has requested that the investigation be wrapped up in
the next 20 days because, he said, it is not fair to the
people to drag it out any longer. Wynne also said citizens
need to know the results before the primary.
Wynne said he feels that this action is "political and
party related." He also apologized to the Franklin County
Democratic Party for any embarrassment he may have caused.
