A Wake Forest policy that pays one half of health insurance premiums for town employees retiring with 15 or fewer years of service will remain in effect for current workers.
The board of commissioners, however, are poised to change the policy for new employees when it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in town hall.
Earlier this year the board became aware that employees were allowed the generous conditions for retirement. Those with 15 or more years of service to Wake Forest enjoyed full payment of their health insurance premiums.
As a formality, the board during its planning session last week asked Town Manager Mark Williams to create the new policy in writing, which most likely will be approved at the April 15 meeting.
Employees hired after that date will fall under the new guidelines:
Those who retire with fewer than 15 years of service to the town may continue their health insurance coverage. The employee will pay 100 percent of the cost.
Employees retiring with 15-19 years of service will split the cost of the premiums with the town.
Those who retire with 20 or more years of service to Wake Forest will have 100 percent of their health insurance premiums paid by the town.
Employees are able to retire with few years of service to Wake Forest because they have previously worked for other municipal or county governments.
