WF seeking advisory board members

The town of Wake Forest has extended its deadline for positions on several advisory boards to Friday, Dec. 3. By serving, local residents have an opportunity to become involved in the development of the town.
The following terms are available:
Board of Adjustment: Four expiring terms: two in-town; one out-of town (ETJ); one in-town alternate member. The board of adjustment consists of five members who hear and decide appeals where it is alleged by the appellant that there is error in any order, requirement, permit, decision, determination or refusal made by the Zoning Enforcement Officer or other administrative officials in the carrying out or enforcement of any provision of the Zoning Ordinance. Members serve three-year terms. Currently, the board of adjustment meets on the third Thursday of each month at town hall in the board room.
Cemetery Advisory Board: One expiring term and one vacancy due to the unexpected death of a member. The cemetery advisory board consists of five members who advise the board of commissioners and town staff in matters affecting cemetery policies and improvements. The cemetery advisory board meets on an as-needed basis. Members serve three-year terms and are appointed by the board of commissioners.
Historic Preservation Commission: Two vacancies due to resignations. The vacancies are for citizens who live within the historic district located on North Main Street. The historic preservation commission consists of 10 members whose purpose is to promote the educational, cultural and economic welfare of the Town of Wake Forest by preserving structures, sites, monuments, streets, and neighborhoods which serve as visible reminders of the history and cultural heritage of the town. Members serve four-year terms and meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the planning office located at 221 South Brooks St.
Human Relations Council: Four expiring terms and one vacancy due to resignation of a member. The human relations council consists of 11 members whose duties are to encourage understanding and goodwill among all people and thus promote the general welfare of the town. Members serve three-year terms and meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the courtroom at the public safety building.
Planning Board: Five in-town expiring terms and one out-of-town (ETJ) expiring term. The planning board consists of 10 members whose duties are to establish principles and policies for guiding action in the development of the town. The board meets on the first Tuesday of each month at town hall at 7:30 p.m. Out-of-town members serve two-year terms and are appointed by the Wake County Board of Commissioners on recommendation of the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners.
Recreation Advisory Board: Three expiring terms. The recreation board consists of nine members whose duties are to suggest policies within their powers and responsibilities and serve as liaison between the parks and recreation department, the town manager and the board of commissioners in matters affecting recreation policies, programs and the acquisition and disposal of lands and properties related to the total community recreation program. Members serve three-year terms and meet on the fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Flaherty Park Community Center.
Senior Center Advisory Board: One expiring term and two vacancies for senior members. One non-senior vacancy. The senior center advisory board consists of nine members whose duties are to advise the town in the operation of the senior center, which may include recommending policies, programs, activities, etc. The senior center advisory board meets on the first Tuesday of each quarter at 3 p.m. at the senior center located on Holding Avenue.
Tree Board: One out-of-town vacancy due to the unexpected death of a member. One in-town expiring term. The tree board consists of nine members who oversee the town urban forestry program including the town's annual Arbor Day program and planting events as well as advising the board of commissioners on policies relating to trees and landscape regulations. The tree board meets on the second Monday of each month at 8 p.m. at the planning office located at 221 S. Brooks St. Members serve three-year terms.
Any resident interested in serving on advisory boards should contact Town Clerk Joyce Wilson, 554-6190, for an application. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, Dec. 3, for consideration of appointment at the Dec. 21 board meeting.
The board of commissioners will interview candidates at its work session Dec. 9.
