FRANKLINTON — Franklin County Public Utilities experienced a bypass of untreated wastewater from a pump station located on Chavis Street in Franklinton Friday, June 7.
The spill occurred after the area received at least 3.5 inches of rain during the afternoon hours in association with a tropical system. The main cause of the bypass is attributable to the direct inflow of storm water into the Town of Franklinton’s sewer collection system.
It is estimated that approximately 20,000 gallons of untreated wastewater entered a tributary of Cedar Creek which is located in the Tar River Basin.
Franklin County staff was notified of the spill by electronic monitoring equipment and appropriate staff responded to the incident.
As required by state law, the spill was reported to the N.C. Division of Water Quality via the N.C. Division of Emergency Management and is currently under review.
