Cheryl Smith Harrison, 50, of Raleigh, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014. She was born in Tokyo to Col. Dale Smith and Edith Marie Hildebran Smith.
Cheryl grew up in High Point and graduated from High Point Central High School in 1981. She received a bachelor’s of science in zoology from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1985 and a doctorate of veterinary medicine from N.C. State University in 1989. She worked as a veterinarian and taught at NCSU as well as Wake Technical Community College.
She was an accomplished painter, fiber artist, and recently published children’s book author. She also enjoyed performing music through singing in local a cappella groups, choirs, and a family bluegrass band. She was known for her kind and generous spirit toward every living being, and no creature went away hungry from her backyard.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Lee Harrison; son, Robby Harrison of Raleigh; brother, Dennis Smith and wife Katherine of Austin, Texas; and sister, Kathryn Drake and husband, Frank, of Wake Forest.
A memorial service honoring her life will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Umstead Park United Church of Christ, 8208 Brownleigh Drive, Raleigh. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.
