Fundraiser planned for Sept. 10
WAKE FOREST — “Fight Like a Longhorn” has become the battle cry of a community rallying around University of Texas fan, longtime resident and beloved local teacher, Danny Ransford, who is currently battling colon cancer.
It is a cry that is bringing people together from around the world; friends from as far as Sweden have reached out and shown support by buying the signature fundraising T-shirts created by Thales parents.
Closer to home, the Ransfords have received support from the Shuckers Foundation, which came to do room makeovers for Ransford’s three girls, as well as many other local businesses including Thales Academy, where Ransford has taught third grade for nine years.
For Ransford, the journey will be grueling; surgery as well as chemotherapy at Rex UNC until Thanksgiving in addition to a range of other treatments. But he is feeling optimistic and strong, bolstered by his community. “It has been overwhelming, truly overwhelming,” he said.
On Sunday, Sept. 10 from 3-7 p.m. Gatehouse Tavern, along with residents of the Wake Forest community and parents and teachers from Thales, will be hosting a fundraiser for Ransford to help cover costs of treatment that are not covered by insurance.
The event will feature live music by the Magic Pipers, and entry is free. Attendees will be able to purchase tickets for food, games, face-painting for kids and more. For more information about the event and Ransford’s battle with cancer, go to Facebook and search for the group “Ransford ROCKS Cancer.” Well-wishers can donate to the cause by sending checks made out to Danny Ransford Medical Fund, 704 Walters Drive, Wake Forest NC 27587.
