Wakefield-6, Wake Forest-3
by David Allen
WAKE FOREST — Wake Forest High School’s away match at Wakefield High was a chance for the girls to play against a bigger and more experienced team early in the season, which has given the Cougars difficulty for years.
“The game against Wakefield was exciting!” said Wake Forest coach Cynthia Keller. “We split in singles games 3-3 so we scrambled to assemble stronger doubles teams. We ended up losing 3-6 but we’ve been working hard and it is starting to show. Last year we would see a bunch of ‘love’ – zeros across the score sheet. Last week we scored in every match. That’s huge for WF Tennis against Wakefield.”
Wakefield’s coach Ken Stewart is also pleased with how his team did and has carried themselves.
“The girls are doing fine here in the early season, getting the job done and creating some chemistry,” Stewart said. “We’ve been able to get a lot of girls some experience here early and hopefully it will pay off down the road. Schedule gets a lot tougher these next couple matches and weeks, and hopefully the leaders will step to the plate.”
The 1-2 Cougar team plays at Leesville at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, while Wakefield plays at Broughton at the same time.
