Derek Thomas Icenhour, 16, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Duke University Hospital. He was born in Westmoreland County, Pa. Derek attended Wakefield High School, was a member of Wake Forest Presbyterian youth group and was a life Scout with Wake Forest Boy Scout Troop 5.
Derek was compassionate and caring of others, especially children facing serious medical issues, even in the midst of his own challenges. He had a great sense of humor and found friends everywhere he went. Derek was a strong Christian and was not afraid to share his faith with others. He was a sports fan, especially devoted to the Virginia Tech Hokies and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Derek is survived by his parents, Tony and Kristin Zaker Icenhour; sister, Shannon Brooke Icenhour; and brother, Kevin Anthony Icenhour, all of Wake Forest; grandparents, Leroy and Barbara Icenhour, of Bristol, Va.; and Bernadette Zaker, of Rockville, Md. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Thomas Zaker.
Visitation was held at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center Wednesday, June 25. A celebration of Derek’s life will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday), June 26, at Wake Forest Baptist Church.
