Dewarner Earl Duke, Jr., 73, of Youngsville, passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at Rex Hospital. He was born in Wake County, June 16, 1940, the son of the late Dewarner Earl Duke Sr. and Virginia Dare Lloyd Duke.
He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Lonnie D. Lloyd and Mary Magdaline “Maggie” Pearce Lloyd, with help from his aunt, Vera Belle Lloyd, after his mother’s death.
Duke served in the Army National Guard and worked at IBM Corp. He was past master of the Wake Forest Masonic Lodge. After retiring, he was a community volunteer and enjoyed working on genealogy and gardening and spending time with friends and his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Chrystal Perry Duke.
Visitation was held Wednesday, and funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 19, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack O’Neal officiating. Burial will follow in the Falls Community Cemetery.
Duke leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years, Joyce O’Neal Duke; son, Dewarner Earl Duke III (Paula); daughter, Christina Duke Whittington; granddaughter, Megan Duke; grandsons, Landon and Rowan Whittington; half-sister, Sandra Boykin (Ralph); stepnephew, Len Boykin (Tammy) and family; stepniece, Wendy Boykin Whitley and family; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and their families; and several cousins.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Baptist Church in Wake Forest.
