As anyone who watches the news knows, video games have been the center of debates and arguments since they became widespread.
One of the biggest issues is the believed influence they have on young adults, mainly an increase in violence and aggression.
I would like to point out that, despite possible correlations, no definitive studies have brought forth proof on the subject.
In a recent study by Dr. Christopher Ferguson and Cheryl Olsen, written about by Rick Nauert for PsychCentral, some interesting results were found.
They discovered that the more violent video games, such as Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto, did not cause high-risk teens (teens with symptoms for attention deficit disorder and depression) to become aggressive.
The studies’ findings held nothing to support the idea that video games cause an increase in aggression in youths.
These findings follow a recent Secret Service report that talks about teen violence being related to natural aggression and stress, instead of gaming.
While I am not a psychologist, I have my own long-time gaming experience to draw from.
On the subject of aggressive or angry tendencies brought on by video games, I can say there are times when video games have given me a shorter temper.
I believe this is not unique to gaming, but rather a reaction when something is done so often and it gets to the point of an addiction.
I’ve found that if I make gaming my daily focus, my emotional state can suffer and I get agitated easily.
So with that in mind, anyone who is super-competitive or lacks self control (i.e. children) should be careful. Using designated play times, getting plenty of exercise and taking part in other activities besides gaming go a long way to prevent any bad reactions.
On top of this, parents should keep an eye on what kinds of games their kids play. The ESRB ratings are there for a reason.
