I love a good single-player campaign, with the engaging storyline and developing characters. It really hits the spot. But sometimes, you just need to sit back and game with some friends. Games like that are quite popular, but few are as legendary as the Left 4 Dead series.
The creators of L4D and L4D2, Turtle Rock Studios, have now returned to the four player co-op spotlight with their first next-gen game called Evolve.
The game is an arena-style multiplayer game that allows you to play as one of four hunters, or as the beast itself. The concept of being able to play by yourself or in a group is something that intrigues me. Some might call it a game for everyone. I mean seriously, who doesn’t like shooting huge monsters?
Currently Turtle Rock has only released one of the monsters, called the Goliath. They promise there will be many monsters when the full game is released.
On top of multiple monsters, there are four hunter classes, the first of which is the Trapper class, whose class ability is the Mobile Arena. It is a deployable, well, arena to keep the monster from escaping or getting to injured teammates.
Next comes the Medic, who is anything but a defenseless healer, each one having a specific offensive weapon. The Medic’s class ability is a burst of healing that washes over nearby teammates, instantly healing them.
Now comes the Assault class, he deals the most damage to the monster. His class ability is the Personal Shield, it allows him to ward off for a short time any attacks the monster might throw his way. Knowing when to deploy your shield is what will keep you alive through the hunt.
Last, but oh-so-not-least, is the Support class. I know what you’re thinking, “Blah blah, he’s going to be boring and no fun.” WRONG. This tough hombre packs some mean abilities that increase the damage and abilities of others. His class ability is his Cloaking Device. A small sphere is deployed which envelops allies in invisibility that allows them to sneak up on their prey, or escape from a losing battle.
Oh, I forgot something, you say? You are wrong again. I merely saved the best for last.
The monster. You get to play as a monster.
Did you catch that? You get to play as the beast of the jungle, a literal King Kong. The only as-of-now released monster is the Goliath. He is aptly named.
This sucker leaps small buildings, throws boulders the size of your aunt’s minivan, and did I mention he breathes fire? He breathes fire.
Needless to say, this game is at the top of my to-buy list. Check it out at evolvegame.com.
