WAKE FOREST — The 9th annual Eastern Triangle Farm Tour, sponsored by the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association and Whole Foods Market, will give participants a behind-the-scenes look at 27 sustainable farms in Durham, Wake, Franklin, Granville and Person counties — including nine new farms.
The self-guided driving tour happens Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20-21, 1-5 p.m. both days.
“Whether you hope to see cute animals, buy fresh-as-it-gets produce and meat, learn gardening and homesteading skills, or just create unforgettable memories while visiting some of the prettiest acreage in our region, the Eastern Triangle Farm Tour has something to offer you,” tour coordinator, Leah Joyner said. The tour features urban farms, a goat cheese dairy, lots of livestock and gorgeous late-summer, organic vegetables, plus honeybee hives, a petting zoo, hayrides, chicken tractors and more.
This year’s tour features nine new farms. Don’t miss the ducklings, chicks and fainting goats at Wake Forest’s Chickcharney Farm where they also produce shiitake mushrooms and vegetables. Or, visit Franklinton’s Turtle Mist Farm and meet their sheep, cattle, pigs, pastured poultry, rabbits and draft horses. They also have a small market garden and a hay wagon ride and pony rides will be available. Finally, Walk Ahead Farm showcases how a family homestead became a fully-operating, family farm.
Tour tickets, good for both days, are $25 per vehicle in advance and $30 on the tour weekend. Or, you can choose to pay $10 per farm (available for purchase at all of the farms during the tour). Cycle groups count as one vehicle. Tickets may be purchased currently online at carolinafarmstewards.org.
The tour is self-guided. Participants can choose the farms they want to visit on the interactive map. Farms may be visited in any order.
Don’t forget to take a cooler to bring home farm fresh products that will be for sale at many farms.
No pets are allowed on the tour. The tour is rain or shine. Proceeds from the tour support the work of the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association.
