Hal Smith, 69, of Wake Forest, loving husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully and unexpectedly Monday, March 10, 2014. Hal was the son of Hal E. Smith and Margaret M. Smith. He was born June 11, 1944, in Greensboro, N.C., and grew up in Hampton, Va.
Hal graduated from Hampton High School in 1962, and from RPI, presently Virginia Commonwealth University, in 1966. He served in the US Army from 1966-68 and was stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he joined Brown Shoe Company in 1968 and was based in Albuquerque, NM. In 1972, he moved to Rochester, NY and then relocated to Raleigh. On November 26, 1972, he married his college sweetheart and the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Kannon, of Franklinton. In 1978, after the birth of their son, Farris, they moved to Wake Forest.
In 1988 Hal retired from Brown Shoe Co. and bought the Wake Forest Western Auto in 1989. His hobbies were sports and classic cars. Hal enjoyed playing golf with his regular group of golf buddies and attending Cleveland Indian baseball games.
Hal loved the people and the community of Wake Forest, giving generously of his time and loving care to friends. He received much pleasure from the many friendships he made throughout his life.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Hal and Margaret Smith. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Elizabeth Smith; son, Farris Edward Smith and his wife, Müge Smith; granddaughter, Gabriela Mina Smith; sister, Audrey Morrison and brother-in-law, Doug; sisters-in-law, Ann Nassif (Martin) and Frances Abbott (Robert); nieces and nephews, Wayne and Debby Morrison, Eddie and Becky Morrison, Dawn Kingston, Alysen and Mary-Charles Nassif, David and Elizabeth Ann Abbott; Müge’s parents and special friends, Meltem and Osman Sandikçioglu, of Ankara, Turkey.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 14, 2014, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Burial was in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Eddie Morrison, Wayne Morrison, David Abbott, Joe Silek, Sam Silek, and Osman Sandikçioglu. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Toney, Lee Yarborough, Don Newsome, Martin Nassif, Dave Cohron, and Ellis Zaytoun.
