YOUNGSVILLE — Franklin County Public Utilities (FCPU) experienced a bypass of untreated wastewater from a gravity sewer line and pump station in Youngsville the week of July 15. The spill was caused by heavy rainfall in association with a quick moving storm system.
Rainfall amounts recorded at the site of the spill exceeded 2.5 inches. FCPU estimated approximately 50,000 gallons of untreated wastewater entered a tributary of Richland Creek, which is located in the Neuse River Basin.
FCPU staff were notified of the spill by monitoring equipment. Clean up of the area was performed and the affected waterways have been flushed in accordance with NC Division of Water Quality (NCDWQ) protocols.
As required by state law, the spill was reported to NCDWQ via the N.C. Department of Emergency Management and is currently under review.
