Youngsville, July 16, 2014: Franklin County Public Utilities experienced bypasses of untreated wastewater from pump stations located on South Nassau Sf, Park Avenue, and Railroad Street in Youngsville on Tuesday , July 15,2014. The spills occurred after receiving rainfall in excess of 4.5” in short duration which caused flash flooding in the area. The main cause of the bypasses is attributable to the direct inflow of stormwater into the sewer collection system. It is estimated that approximately 47,500 gallons of untreated wastewater entered an unnamed tributary of Richland Creek.
Franklin County staff was notified of the spill by electronic monitoring equipment and appropriate staff responded to the incident. All operating equipment was found to be in working order but was unable to handle the inflow of stormwater.
As required by North Carolina State Law, the spill was reported to the North Carolina Division of Water Quality via the Department of Emergency Management and is currently under review.
