WAKE FOREST — It was a night where everything went right for Heritage’s softball team and everything went wrong for Wake Forest. The Huskies blew out the Cougars 11-1 at Wake Forest Tuesday.
The game ended early at five innings because of the mercy rule. Heritage had 13 hits while Wake Forest only had one.
"We scored in almost every inning," Heritage coach Mark Downing said. "We should have scored in the first inning, but we had a base running blunder. We knocked the crap out of the ball."
Wake Forest’s Sarah Walker scored on fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first inning. After that, the game belonged to Heritage.
At the top of the second, Grace Valchar scored off of a double from Hayley Lambertsen. Then in the top of the third, Heritage scored three more to make it 4-1.
The Huskies finished the Cougars off in the top of the fifth when they scored six runs. Ashley Gontram had three hits with three RBIs and scored two runs.
Georgeanna Barefoot pitched a one-hitter and also had two hits at the plate with three RBIs.
"We had one girl out of nine struggle tonight," Downing said. "The rest of them had one hit after another. These girls aren’t afraid of Wake Forest anymore."
Wake Forest couldn’t get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning and the game ended, handing the Cougars their first conference loss of the season.
"Heritage hit the ball and we didn’t," Wake Forest coach Brittany Owens said. "Heritage’s pitcher threw well. I wish we would have been more patient and not jumping on the first pitch, we would have seen more pitches."
With the win, Heritage stays undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record. Wake Forest drops to 5-4 and 2-1 in conference play.
The two crosstown rivals shared the Cap 8 conference title last year. Downing said this year, his girls are going to change that.
"I told the girls that this is our time," Downing said. "They have to believe that it’s their time or it will never be their time. They just came out here and took it to Wake Forest."
Heritage’s next game is at home April 6 against Millbrook at 7 p.m.
Wake Forest’s next game is at Cary April 4 at 6:30 p.m.
