Birth of a rivalry

September 9, 2010
WAKE FOREST — The final score might not reflect it, but Heritage High accomplished its two biggest goals in a 2-0 loss to Wake Forest-Rolesville in the school’s first-ever conference match Tuesday night.
In each Cap-8 match this season, HHS coach Scott Sloan wants his team to compete and he wants to make the other team remember them. Mission accomplished.
The Huskies played compact, locking up the middle of the field and forcing WF-R to operate in traffic. Heritage kept the Cougars off the board for the first 49 minutes before allowing a goal to Seth Poole on a breakaway.
“They held in very well (on defense) and they got into our heads a little bit,” WF-R coach Jeremiah Mattingly said. “Kudos to them. For such a young team, they played really hard.”
WF-R midfielder Zach Jacobs tacked on the game-clinching goal with 3:16 left, getting a one-on-one opportunity from the right side and putting it in from 17 yards.
Though there were plenty of moral victories for Heritage, the Huskies weren’t satisfied.
