Jean Mitchell Whitehurst, 82, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013 at Rex Hospital. She was born in Orange County, the daughter of the late William M. Mitchell and Mary Ross Mitchell.
Whitehurst graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education from East Carolina College in 1951. Afterwards she taught elementary school in New Orleans, and later at the N.C. School for the Blind in Raleigh. When her oldest was born, she became a stay-at-home mother which was her true calling in life. She was an avid golfer and loved watching birds.
Later in life, Whitehurst enjoyed going to the YMCA, meeting friends and participating in water aerobics and the monthly birthday luncheons. Her kids and their spouses, family and friends were her passion. She loved Christmas and especially loved cooking around the holidays and doting on her kids during this special time of the year.
A memorial gathering was held Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 at Bright Funeral Home and Cremation Center. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
Whitehurst is survived by her children, Sandra J. Whitehurst and husband, Gregg Richter, of Easton, Md. and Ralph A. Whitehurst, Jr. and wife, Mary Ann, of Wake Forest; siblings, Capt. Billy R. Mitchell US Navy (Ret.) and wife, Ruth, of Jacksonville, Fla., Grayce M. Broili of Southern Pines, Capt. Joseph A. Mitchell US Navy (Ret.) and wife, Hilda, of Pine Bluff, Jan Mitchell Peyrot of Colonial Heights, Va. and Dorothy M. Byrd and husband, James, of Kinston; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
