John L. Skinner Jr., of Stuart, Va., formerly of Wake Forest, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, N.C., surrounded by his family. He was born Dec. 4, 1932, to Leon Hardy Hines Skinner and John Llewellyn Skinner in Kinston, N.C.
He was raised in Kinston and received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He also attended medical school at the University of Miami. His true passion was outdoor life and anything related to nature. He loved to hunt and fish. He retired from North Carolina State University as a horticultural researcher. He spent the last 28 years on the land he and his loving wife purchased in Stuart, Va. They built a house on heavily wooded property with pasture and ponds. It was his dream to be surrounded by a menagerie of pets, birds and livestock and he was living his dream!
Mr. Skinner is survived by his wife, Kiri Ringrose, of the home; his children, Lynn Skinner and husband, David Warren, of Durham; Jean Skinner and husband, Chris Chappell, of Oxford; Sarah Skinner of Durham; Mary Skinner Fresneda and husband, Jim, of Homestead, Fla.; John L. Skinner III and wife, Dee, of Youngsville; granddaughter, Mary Celeste Skinner; step-children Fiona Allen and husband, Ian Bryant, of Australia; Owen Allen and wife, Laura McMillian, of Germany; step-grandchildren Kiah and Stephanie Bryant, Genevieve and Johnathan Allen, who loved their “Poppy.” He will also be missed by his bartender, David Davis.
