Juanita Dent Core Hopkins, 109, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013. She was born Oct. 22, 1903 in Wake Forest, the daughter of the late Rev. James Robert Dent and Bettie Ann Johnson Dent.
As a young child, she attended The Baptist School and the Allen Young School of Wake Forest. Hopkins was baptized at an early age. She became a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church where her brother, Willie Edward, served as a church official.
During her life, Hopkins lived in Richmond, Va., New York and then returned Wake Forest. She worked as a practical nurse during the flu epidemic of 1918. She enjoyed gardening, and had them featured in The Wake Weekly and The Carolinian.
In the 1920s, Hopkins was married to the late Charles Emory Core of High Point and was subsequently married to the late James Hopkins of Durham.
Hopkins is survived by a daughter, Annette “Kitty” Core Lewis; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20 at Olive Branch Baptist Church with a viewing at 10:30 a.m. and eulogistic service at 11 a.m., officiated by Dr. R. Logan Carson.
