WAKE FOREST — Two fourth-grade girls wandered away from school Monday, leading to a frantic search by law enforcement officers before they were found unharmed.
The girls are students at Franklin Academy, 1127 Chalk Road.
“They left campus, and they were going to walk to their houses. For period of time we were trying to locate them,” said David Mahaley, head administrator for the charter school.
Mahaley returned a call for comment left for Denise Kent, the middle school administrator.
He said the girls left the campus after recess, just before lunchtime during which the students play outside. When a count was done as the children came back in, the pair was discovered missing.
School staff conducted a quick check of the campus, then notified police.
Law enforcement officers began a search, finding the youths shortly thereafter.
Mahaley said he didn’t know in which direction the girls went.
He declined to state if any disciplinary action will result.
“Fortunately it all worked out,” Mahaley added. “We appreciate that the authorities were very quick to help us. They did an outstanding job.”
