Leonard Fred “Len” Watkins, 81, of Wake Forest passed away at WakeMed Monday, July 29, 2013. Watkins was born Aug. 21, 1931 in Wake County, the son of the late Wesley Marvin Watkins and Nellie Gray Hagwood Watkins.
He worked with Mallinckrodt Chemicals, and was known for having a large vegetable garden. Watkins was a lifelong member of Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church, where he served with the children’s ministries, bus ministry, as an RA leader and deacon.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday), Aug. 1 at Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church, 3328 Forestville Road, Raleigh with Dr. Bill Bowyer and Dr. Randy Mann officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Watkins is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Jane Hailey Watkins; children, Brenda W. Tyner, James Russell Watkins and his wife, Beverly, all of Wake Forest and Joy Lynnette W. Goreman and her husband, Sammy, of Oxford; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; siblings, Laura W. Medlin and her husband, Graham, Rebecca “Becky” W. Medlin and her husband, Garland, and Andrew Jackson “Doc” Watkins, all of Wake Forest; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Johnny Len Watkins; and siblings, Wesley Milton Watkins, Ethel Watkins Medlin, George Harold Watkins, Alton Ervin Watkins, Norris David Watkins, Willie Marvin Watkins, Livian Florence Watkins, Arthur Lee Watkins, Lewis Elbert Watkins and Betty Lou Watkins.
Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church building fund.
