WAKE FOREST — A freak lightning strike is believed to have started a fire that damaged a Granville County house with a Wake Forest address Friday evening.
No one was home at the time, Brassfield Volunteer Fire Department Chief Greg Hockaday said.
Media reports state that the lightning may have ignited a gas line feeding into the home and that a neighbor heard an explosion.
Brassfield, in rural Franklinton, responded to the fire with three trucks. Stony Hill, Creedmoor, Youngsville and Wake Forest also responded to the rural Wake Forest site on Corrina Road.
Corrina Road is off Bruce Garner Road, about two miles northeast of Wake County and two miles southwest of Franklin County.
The house is one story with a bonus room.
“We basically put the fire out and had Red Cross come in and help homeowners out,” said Hockaday.
It took firefighters about 38 minutes to get the fire under control, he said.
