Mary Thomas Walters, 92, of Leesburg, Va., passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 at Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Rolesville, North Carolina, the daughter of the late William Thomas Debnam and late Amie Perry Debnam Lane, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Newton Alton Walters; her brothers, Warren Debnam and Jimmy Spence Lane and by her sister, Peggy Ferrell.
She is survived by her five daughters, Ann Mulqueen of Strasburg, Va., Ida Walters of Detroit, Mich., Margaret Walters of Taos, N.M., Patricia Anderson of Leesburg, Va. and Viki Gustavson of Cabo, Mexico.
Walters was also survived by her sisters, Janet Bartlett of Oakridge, Tenn. and Myrtle Carnevale of Fayetteville; many nieces and nephews and two special friends, Silvia Barros of Reston, Va. and Mary Moreland of Arlington, Va.
Funeral services were held Aug. 19, 2013 at Rolesville Baptist with the Reverend J. Marshall Neathery and the Reverend Dr. Randy Bridges officiating. Burial was in the Rolesville Baptist Church Cemetery.
Walters was affectionately known as “Big Mama” to her 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was known for her frank wit coupled with graciousness. That plus her decency, integrity and general toughness has set an enduring legacy. She will be greatly missed by her family and many admiring friends.
