It’s hard to believe that the PS3, Xbox, and Wii have been around for over five years. It is harder to believe that each system boasts more than 700 games for each platform. So it is easy to overlook a great
game or two and I am here to help.
For PlayStation gamers, you should go back and check out Valkyria Chronicles. This title is a pleasant yet serious turn-based tactical roleplaying video game. Valkyria Chronicles has a cartoon style gameplay that puts you in the middle of a war between two countries and you must help the protagonists win.
It has an in-depth story, with a bit of fantasy integrated to keep you on your toes. As the player, you control a small army (around 12 characters depending on story arc) with each person having different weapons and abilities. For example, many characters use pistols or rifles and yet they can be a nurse, general, tank operator, etc.
The setting is 1935, in a fictional world similar to Europe during that time. Gameplay is very similar to a game of chess, but don’t worry — it’s nowhere near as complicated. It is a cartoon you are playing, but it will take some form of strategy to beat it entirely. Even though the characters and situations are made up, you will feel like you are a part of the world and you want your soldiers to make it back to their families.
Overall the gaming community gave it high scores as well, but unfortunately sales didn’t reflect the rating. Valkyria Chronicles has long since been pushed to the back of the line, but is a hidden gem. It has kept up visually and is a joy to play for any gamer.
