WAKE FOREST — Franklin Academy’s girls tennis team kept their winning streak alive with a pair of victories last week.
The Patriots, 7-1, made it five wins in a row after defeating Roxboro Community on their home turf, 8-1 Friday, and Voyager Academy 7-2 in a Patriot home match, Sept. 11. Both matches were North Central Athletic Conference matches.
Franklin Academy tennis coach Greg Duffy said he knew the match against Voyager Academy would be a difficult one.
“We played them close last year with one match being a 5-4 win for us,” he said. ‘They have a player, Kinsey Blount, who rarely loses and was a qualifier for last year’s individual regional tournament.”
“Our top two players, were out,” Duffy added. “Casey (Langer) was sick and Kinsey (Blount) was out nursing a chronic back injury.”
Still, the rest of the Patriots came through so the match was not in doubt.
Freshman Krysten Le lined up against Blount and lost 1-8; however, the rest of the singles matches were won by Franklin Academy.
Briana Kusilek, at No. 2 singles, defeated Hailey Plymire, 8-2 and teammates Erin Connell and Bonnie Morgan won their singles matches by scores of 8-1.
At number four singles, Taylor Henrie shut her opponent out and Lauren Emer was an 8-3 winner, playing number six singles.
The Patriots lost the first doubles, 4-8, but won the other two doubles to claim the match.
Le and Henrie won 8-2 and Connell and Jessica Graham, came from behind to defeat their doubles opponent 8-3, winning the last six games.
“Erin lobbed it over their net player and Jessica was there for the slam on short returns,” Duffy said. “They both did a great job.”
Against Roxboro Community, Franklin Academy captured five of six singles matches.
Langer, at No. 1 singles, won 6-3, 6-0. Le, filling in for Ness, lost a three-set match by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 4-10.
Connell, at four singles and Morgan, playing six, both won 6-0, 6-0.
Kusilek beat her opponent 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Henrie won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot.
Leading 5-1, the Patriots won all three doubles matches.
The Patriots are 3-0 in the league and their next match is Monday, September 23 at home against River Mill.
Franklin Academy is tracked out for the next three weeks and there are no matches scheduled during the first week.
