FRANKLINTON — Franklin Academy’s track and field team won their first North Central Athletic conference championship meet in their second year as a program at Franklinton High School Friday.
The Patriots won a total of 13 events while Voyager Academy tied for second with six first-place finishers. Research Triangle won the first conference championship last year, but this season the Raptors won only six events.
Franklin Academy had two girls win multiple events. Caitlyn Burkett won both the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run. The sophomore ran a career-best time of 5:22.05 in the 1,600-meter and a 12:11.56 in the 3,200-meter.
Leah Given finished first in both the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. The freshman ran a 1:06.43 in the 400-meter and a 2:30.82 in the 800-meter. Both Burkett and Given were also on the 4x800-meter relay team that won first place with a time of 10:51.94.
Franklin Academy’s girls team also won the 4x100-meter relay, the 4x200-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay.
In other girls events, Franklin Academy’s Karrington Garland won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 55.42 seconds. Hannah Franklin won the high jump with a personal-best measurement of 4-feet-9-inches. Finally, Abby Dunn won the long jump with a career-best distance of 16-feet-7-inches.
For the boys team, Jacob Joyner was the top performer for Franklin Academy. The senior won both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash for the Patriots. Joyner ran the 100-meter in 11.71 seconds and the 200-meter with a personal-record time of 24.24 seconds.
Stephen Elliott won the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.15 seconds. The sophomore also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.61 seconds.
Franklin Academy also won the 4x200-meter relay and the 4x800-meter relay. Zachary Bunner, who was a member of the winning relay teams, finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.34. Jonathan Wertz, another winning member of the relay teams, placed third in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:15.34.
All of the athletes mentioned will compete in the 1A mideast regional track and field meet Saturday at Trask High School in Rocky Point.
