Murder mystery unfolding on film

July 29, 2010
(First in a series on the making and marketing of a motion picture.)
INTERIOR CAFÉ — DAY:
Rob sits inside a café. Miles enters with a backpack. He hands it to Rob, who pulls out a hat and sunglasses. He puts them on to disguise himself.
MILES
What’s going on, man?
ROB
You know about the murders? The one’s that are happening in town?
MILES
Who doesn’t? It’s all over the news. Everyone’s saying it’s the return of the “Box Cutter Killer.”
ROB
I think the FBI thinks I’m a suspect.
MILES
Why would they think that?
ROB
I don’t know. Maybe I’m being framed.
MILES
Yeah. Because that’s what a serial killer does; frame an accountant for his murders.
ROB
Miles, I’m serious!
MILES
Well, I’m sorry. It doesn’t seem very plausible to me.
ROB
OK. Well, what if I told you I was connected — to some of his victims. To him. My mother was his first victim.
MILES
Your mother?
ROB
Yeah. And his last victims, Dr. Neil and the other guy, I knew them.
MILES
Woah, Rob. Slow down, OK. You’re not making any sense.
ROB
The guy, his last victim, was the guy that robbed me. I was one of the last people to see him alive. And Dr. Neil ...
MILES
What? Dr. Neil, what?
ROB
OK. What I’m about to tell you, I’ve never told anyone.
WAKE FOREST — Are the police after Rob? Does Rob find the killer? Or does the killer catch up to him first?
To solve this murder mystery, you’ll have to wait and see the movie — A Box For Rob, currently under production at Uptone Pictures in downtown.
