Gregory Peter Shaban, 78
Gregory Peter Shaban, 78, of Raleigh passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 at home. Shaban was born in Queens, N.Y., the son of the late Peter Shaban and Sonia Kaminisky Shaban. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having been honorably discharged in 1961. He was an executive in the consumer products industry for more than 40 years.
Shaban is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cynthia Gervasi Shaban; children, Melisse Frances Shaban and her partner, Jane, of Raleigh, Danielle Marie Shaban-Turner and her husband, Michael, of Wake Forest and Christopher Gregory Shaban and his wife, Giorgia, of Cumberland, R.I.; seven grandchildren; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law; five nieces and nephews; and extended family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Dec. 31 at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Raleigh.

Cecil Bell Collie, 72
Cecil Bell Collie, 72, of Franklinton passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012 at his home. He was born in Nash County, the son of the late Eddie Wilson Collie Sr. and Mary Lula Collie. He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserves and worked as a diesel mechanic with Barnes Truck Lines in Wilson for more than 20 years.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Collie is survived by his children, Jimmy Collie and his wife, Katrina, of Franklinton and Mary Matilda Collie Hatley and her husband, Chris, of Franklinton; his former wife, Betty Collie Hinton of Franklinton; three grandchildren; siblings, Louise Williams of Rocky Mount, Joseph “Dick” Collie of Raleigh, Eddie Wilson Collie Jr. of Kinston, Johnny Collie of Wilson, Tommy Collie of Sharpsburg, Betsy Byrd of Raleigh and Helen Land of High Point; extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his siblings, William Collie, Paul Collie, Annie Belle Pollard and Earl Collie.

Ellen Elizabeth Carpenter, 83
Ellen Elizabeth “GG” Scott Carpenter, 83, of Wake Forest died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at her residence. She was born in Portsmouth, Va.
A private memorial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Carpenter is survived by her daughters, Constance O’Brien of Wake Forest, Cathleen Triestram of Battle Creek, Mich., and Carolyn Clark of Waynesboro, Ga.; sisters, Sandra Oravec of Galena, Mo., and Alice Burris of Leawood, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and a host of great- and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond R. Carpenter, USMC (Ret.).
A visitation was held Friday evening, Dec. 28 at 500 Pressler St., Wake Forest.

Anne Pittman Hardison, 61
Anne Pittman Hardison, 61, of Raleigh went to be with the Lord Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, after a 16-year battle with cancer. She was was born June 9, 1951 in Rocky Mount, the daughter of the late Kenneth Worth Pittman and Elizabeth Coleman Pittman.
Hardison graduated from Meredith College. She was active at Bay Leaf Baptist Church, a leader of many adult Bible study classes and a president of the PTA at West Millbrook Middle School.
Hardison is survived by her husband of 38 years, Richard Everett Hardison of Raleigh; a son, Andrew Worth Hardison and his wife, Ashley, of Apex; a daughter, Susan Hardison Thomsen and her husband, Ryan, of Raleigh; sisters, Susan Elizabeth Pittman of Raleigh and Melissa Pittman Smyth and her husband, Ted, of Raleigh; and two grandsons.
A memorial service was held Saturday afternoon, Dec. 29 at Bay Leaf Baptist Church. Burial was at the church cemetery.

W. Steve Thigpen, 67
W. Steve Thigpen, 67, of Cascade, Va., died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Fannie “Billie” Wood Thigpen and Willie Green Thigpen Jr.
Thigpen is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kathleen Avery Thigpen; daughters, Lisa King and Natalie Oliver both of Clinton, Shauna Ostrander and Sarah Camins both of California and Stephanie Long of Garner; a stepdaughter, Lorna Britt of Danville, Va.; stepson, Jay Edwards of Danville, Va.; brothers, Woody Thigpen of Winter Haven, Fla., and Mark Thigpen of Danville, Va.; and 15 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Anthony “Tony” Thigpen.
A memorial service was held Wednesday morning, Dec. 26, 2012 at the chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. George Campeau officiating.

David Marlin Emmel, 83
David Marlin Emmel, 83, of Wake Forest passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. He was born Sept. 11, 1929 in Johnstown, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Lillian (Faust) Emmel.
Emmel graduated from Dale High School in Johnstown, Pa., in 1947 and received a bachelor’s degree in education from California State Teachers College in California, Pa. He received a master’s degree in education from Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
Emmel joined the Air Force National Guard in 1950 and served as the stenographer for the Adjutant General during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 after becoming a Sergeant.
Emmel worked as an industrial arts teacher in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York. He retired in 1986.
Emmel is survived by his wife, Barbara Emmel of Wake Forest; daughters, Kathryn Randall and her husband, Charles, of Somerset, Pa., Judith Zuzack and her husband, James, of Slippery Rock, Pa., and Lisa Ferracane and her husband, Chris, of Wake Forest; a son, Allen Emmel and his wife, Jenny, of Manchester, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy; and brothers, Donald and Charles.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at The Cremation Social of the Carolinas, 2205 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh. Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pa.

Barbara J. Page, 67, of Raleigh passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. She was born Sept. 21, 1945 in Wake County, the daughter of Betsy Mills Lucas and the late Cleveland Lucas Sr.
Page is survived by her daughter, Tracy Forte of Wake Forest and Brenda Pernell of Knightdale; siblings, Cleveland Billy Lucas of Fayetteville, Janet M. Lucas of Wendell, Linda M. Johnson of Youngsville and Kenneth Lucas of Charlotte; five grandchildren; an aunt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 31 at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church in Wake Forest. Burial followed at Carolina Biblical Gardens in Raleigh.
Rachel Jim Conyers, 69
Rachel Jim Conyers, 69, of Wendell passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at Rex Hospital. He was born Jan. 13, 1943 in Wake County, the son of the late Claude Horton and Nova S. Conyers.
Conyers is survived by a daughter, Sharon C. Hinton; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe Paul Horton of New Jersey; a sister, Joshie Reid of Wendell; two aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 29 at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church in Wake Forest. Burial followed at Macedonia Baptist Church in Wake Forest.
Cleo Riggan Ball, 84
Cleo Riggan Ball, 84, of Franklinton passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2012 at Franklin Regional Medical Center. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Joseph M. and Marjorie Steed Riggan. She worked as a nursing assistant at John Umstead Hospital.
Ball is survived by her children, Jimmy Ball Jr. and his wife, Jo Ann, Kay Mendenhall and her husband, Bud, Debra Harper and her husband, Martin, and Herry Ball and his wife, Yvonne, all of Franklinton and Gale Maulden and her husband, Clay, of Wake Forest; a sister, Ella V. Warren of Roanoke Rapids; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James R. Ball; and daughters, Betty Thomas and Jean Hedgepeth.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 31 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery.
Morris “Mud” Jones, 70
Morris “Mud” Jones, 70, of Louisburg passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012.
Jones is survived by his sisters, Carolyn Jones, Shirley J. Perry, Lubelia Mannsur, Christy Jones, Ruby Muñoz, Johnnie Holloway, Cara Williams and Samantha Williams; and a brother, James Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4 at Richardson Funeral Home Chapel in Louisburg with the Rev. David Rosby officiating. Burial will follow at the Cemetery on the Hill. The family will receive visitors from 4 to 7 p.m. tonight at Richardson Funeral Home.
