Raymond Anthony Schmitz, 76, of Wake Forest, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 at the William M. Dunlap Center for Caring. He was born in Chicago, Ill. to the late Walter A. Schmitz and Freida Schramm Schmitz.
After graduation from high school, Ray joined the Navy and served from 1955-58 as an ET2 repairing submarine electronics. Ray spent the next 35 years as an employee of IBM, moving to Raleigh with the company in 1973. He retired in 1993. There hasn’t been a golfer in the last 10 years at TPC Wakefield who hasn’t experienced the love of life and shared a laugh with “Ranger Ray.” He was an avid sports fan, especially for his beloved teams from Chicago and the Carolina Hurricanes. He loved to play golf, particularly with his special golfing buddies, Domenick Stamegna, of Youngsville, and Robert Bannister, of Raleigh, whenever possible. Ray loved his church, St. Catherine of Siena, and spending time with our Lord in the Holy Eucharist during his regular weekly adoration hour. Ray was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013 at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.
