RALEIGH — The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Red Flag Warning for 11 a.m.-6 p.m. as well as a Special Weather Statement regarding gusty winds today.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire conditions are occurring now or will shortly. The combination of strong winds and low relative humidity combined with dry brush and tree litter, will create explosive fire growth potential in central North Carolina today.
Sustained winds from the southwest of 15-20 miles per hour will gust up to 35 mph today. A few gusts to 40 mph may also be possible. Winds of this magnitude are capable of downing small tree limbs as well as blowing around trash cans and lawn furniture. Driving may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
The relative humidity will drop as low as 20-25 percent. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
This Red Flag Warning replaces the earlier issued Fire Weather Watch and is for all of central North Carolina, including Granville, Franklin, Wake.
