Roy Edward Niner, 77, of Wake Forest, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014, at his residence. He was the son of the late Henry Edward Niner and Eskey Miller Niner.
Roy lived in Frostburg, Md., for most of his life, and moved to Wake Forest in 2012. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and he was a lifetime member of the Frostburg Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief during part of his tenure. He also served several years as a deacon at Graceland Baptist Church in Shortgap, W.Va. He was a professional truck driver his entire career. Roy was skilled in carpentry and enjoyed building, creating and repairing items in his beloved shop.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith Niner; children, Jane Ann Hutchinson (husband Thomas), of Millis, Mass.; Daniel Niner, of Laurel, Md.; and Emily Bellflower (husband Ben), of Wake Forest; sisters, Betty Rakoczy, of Bridgeport, Pa.; Evelyn Nickel and Vi Niner, both of Frostburg, Md.; grandchildren, Emma, Ava, Austin and Anna (due Aug. 23); and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Niner.
A private graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 4, in the Wake Forest Cemetery. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at LaVale Baptist Church in Lavale, Md., Aug. 9 at 2 p.m.
