A few years ago Nintendo was still revealing brand new ideas and innovations to the gaming world. One of these unique concepts was the game called de Blob. It was originally released in 2008 for the Nintendo Wii.
What made this title stand out was the overall goal of the game, which was to paint the town red — literally. The story is about a fictional city that is taken over by aliens that sap away all the color. Without color, the townsfolk become depressed and have no hope of a happy life.
Enter in a ragtag team of flamboyant individuals who are unaffected by the bad guys’ color-draining techniques. It is because they have the special ability of throwing blobs of color anywhere to stain any object they touch. Becoming unlikely heroes by default, they embark on a quest to save their home.
A simple game with an easy setup, de Blob is a standard platformer where you run around in third perspective and you have the capability of jumping on buildings. Players have the task of moving their character around and throwing color on buildings to restore the place back to normal.
The mechanics for colorization are quite beautiful. Fluid motion of paint splashing and spilling in different directions is visually appealing. The characters start out with basic colors but an upgrade down the road will provide the ability to add patterns.
What makes this a fun game is the open aspect to how you can complete the levels. The in-game purpose is to reach a certain point score by making a mess of the town with your blob creations. Different buildings provide bigger points and the quicker you can finish a task adds additional points to your total as well.
The game de Blob is perfect for younger audiences and anyone who likes a little chaos. The controls are so simple that you don’t even use all the ones available on the Wii remotes. A story chock-full of humor and traditional 3D animation will make this enjoyable for the family.
All great games have something that they can improve upon and de Blob has a few shortcomings. Variety is limited to what you will paint and the texture it will be. This aspect can keep some people entertained only for so long, especially if you are an avid gamer like me.
Altogether, de Blob is an amazing game that you can jump into very quickly. Unfortunately, hardcore gamer audiences may have a difficult time playing it for long periods of time because of the simple nature of gameplay. But it is a hidden gem worth trying out.
