WAKE FOREST—The combined team from Wakefield Middle and High schools took top honors at the 19th annual Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce Spelling Bee, helping to raise $5,000 for community school teacher grants.
The Wakefield teachers may have enjoyed the other teams’ misfortune just a little as they correctly spelled the final word, schadenfreude, claiming the top title for the third year in a row.
Members of the winning team, sponsored by Triangle Family Dentistry of Heritage, were Timothy Tharrington, Kelly Niles and Ed Tharrington.
For the past three years, CenturyLink has played host sponsor by providing the location and refreshments, while also entering teams into the competition.
In all, six school teams, three business teams and one non-profit organization participated in this year’s bee.
The teacher grants will be awarded at December’s Business After Hours chamber event.
