A benefit fundraiser is being held for former Wake Weekly employee Steve King on Friday, March 3, at the Korner Pocket Sports Bar and Grille.
King, the newspaper’s former page layout and ad designer, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in December 2015. He received treatment at UNC/Rex Cancer Center in Raleigh.
Those treatments are intense and hard on body and soul (not to mention bank account), musician Carol Parker Schafer notes on the fundraiser page. Steve is at home now and receiving hospice services.
King was a behind-the-scenes guy working at The Wake Weekly and for many years, The News and Observer. In his younger days, many knew him as the rhythm guitar player for The Othermothers band.
“A fellow musician, a photographer, a man of so many talents — Steve King — and his wife Pam need our help now,” Schafer writes. “Let’s Stand Up for Steve … for music, food, prizes, raffles and fun.”
The event runs from 6-11 p.m. The Korner Pocket is at 8508 Capital Blvd., Raleigh, just north of Perry Creek Road.
