ROLESVILLE — Rolesville High School golfer Allison Nowell will get a lot of individual attention and instruction on the golf course this fall.
The freshman will go solo this inaugural golf season after being the only player to sign up to play golf for the new school.
Three players are needed to compete as a team; however Nowell will still have the opportunity to score as an individual during the Rams Greater Neuse Conference matches.
“I would have liked to have had at least three girls so we could score as a team,” said Rolesville High golf coach Christian Haugen. “At this time, I am not expecting other golfers, however; there may be some interest once students arrive on campus.”
Haugen said sometimes middle school students are not aware that high school athletics start before the school year.
“That and the fact that based on our conference coaches meeting, participation numbers are down across the board in girls golf,” Haugen said.
Nowell brings a little experience to the program.
“I got my first clubs when I was seven,” she said. “My dad plays and I started going with him to the course and I begin to like golf.”
About two years ago, Nowell said she became serious about the sport. She describes herself as a long distance hitter.
“I want to improve on my short game,” she said, “and I am looking forward to playing competitive golf at Rolesville High School.”
The Rams home course is the Wendell Country Club, and Nowell has been working with Haugen there this summer.
“It’s like she’s getting private lessons,” Haugen said. “Allison is getting a lot of individual instruction, which is to her benefit.”
Before coming to Rolesville High, Haugen was the healthful living department chair and a teacher at Enloe High School.
He was also the Eagles junior varsity boys basketball coach for seven years and has also coached girls basketball.
While he did not play golf in high school or college, Haugen has been an avid golfer his entire life.
“I am looking forward to this new coaching opportunity,” he said.
