KITTRELL — Billed as Philadelphia cooking with Carolina style, people are invited to dine and listen to bluegrass music while helping to fund community projects.
Franklin BreadWorks, in conjunction with the Ben Franklin Society, hosts two fundraising events in July.
The first event is Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Lynch Creek Farm located at 1973 Rocky Ford Road, Kittrell. Held outdoors, it includes a Bob’s Wood-fired Oven Tomato Pie pizza buffet, along with assorted dipping oils and bread and a dessert sampler.
Bluegrass music will be provided on the front porch by Rick and Bette Newsome as well as performances by guitarist and singer Doug Ross.
Reservations are required for the outdoor event, which costs $12 a person, 25 percent of which is tax-deductible.
Attendees must be members of the Ben Franklin Society. Associate membership fees are $5 a person for a year, which offers opportunities to participate in this BreadWorks event as well as other activities throughout the year.
Another event is Sunday brunch, July 28 at 1 p.m. inside the cabin. The event, costing $15 a person, is a meal with wait staff and also requires reservations and Ben Franklin Society memberships. The slated menu is crab and sweet corn frittatas, vine ripe tomatoes and mozzarella, homemade sausage patties, fresh-baked breads and muffins and rice pudding.
A portion of the money from both events goes to the Ben Franklin Society.
The society is a nonprofit which helps fund independent research projects on matters of importance to the county.
One of its projects is Colonial Hearth Day at Peggy McGhee’s Farm in Franklinton, slated for its second annual event this fall. Allowing youth to experience a day in colonial times, this year’s event includes a new colonial kitchen and herb garden.
Thanks to funds from United Way of Franklin County, plans for this year have this event expanded over two days to include more fourth-grade students from all Franklin County elementary schools.
