ROLESVILLE — For more than four years, Janet Wall has had a specific daily routine. She loads up her SUV with various bags and cans of cat food and drives around to the back of the Rolesville Food Lion.
As she parks her vehicle, out of the woods come running dozens of furry feline bodies meowing eagerly. They’re happy to see her, because Janet Wall is their very own Cat Lady, taking the time to see that they are fed, housed and receive affection.
Wall began feeding cats years ago, out of a deep belief that, “all animals deserve to know love at some point in their lives,” she said.
She manages five feeding stations just like the one behind Food Lion, providing all of the food out of her own pocket and from donations by friends or other cat aficionados.
At the Food Lion station alone, there are about 25 cats, although Wall believes there were many more initially after the April 2011 tornado.
Wall doesn’t just feed them, she’s a responsible friend to the cats. She makes sure they get their rabies shots and participates in a trap-neuter-return program to help ensure the population of cats doesn’t explode.
It's easy to see the felines love her. They come right up to Wall without hesitation. Around others — not so much.
Wall has also set up shelter for the cats in the woods using tarps to make a tent as well as repurposing large drums to make smaller abodes.
Although Wall has a heart plenty big enough to house all her cats — she’s named nearly every one — she could use help continuing to feed them.
Donations of food or money can be dropped off at Rolesville town hall, 502 Southtown Circle. There is a charitable organization set up to help manage donations, so it can be tax-deductible.
Wall will also accept offers of help to make sure the cats are fed daily.
Alternatively, one could just drive around back of the Food Lion and get to know the cats like Wall has. Personally.
Regardless, Wall will continue her routine, carving out time and more room in her life for what have become her babies. That’s just who Janet Wall is.
