RALEIGH — More than 100 drivers and passengers going through Franklin County were cited for seat belt violations during the recent North Carolina Department of Transportation Governor’s Highway Safety Program Click it or Ticket.
Statewide, almost 11,000 drivers and passengers were cited for improper seat belt use during the initiative which took place May 20-June 2.
Franklin County law enforcement agencies held 30 checkpoints during the time. They also charged 13 people for driving while impaired, 130 child restraint charges, 11 criminal violations and 546 other traffic violations, including 170 citations for speeding.
Wake County law enforcement agencies held 57 checkpoints and filed 658 restraint charges for seat belt and child passenger safety violations. They also charged 125 for driving while impaired, 2,143 criminal violations and 4,276 other traffic violation citations.
Statewide there were 1,795 people charged with driving while impaired, 11,412 criminal violations and 55,210 other traffic violations — totaling 82,053 charges filed in North Carolina during the campaign.
Not counted in the state’s totals released June 11 were Wake Forest Police efforts. The department held its seat belt enforcement campaign June 14 on South Main Street between 8:30-10:30 p.m. Helping out were officers from Rolesville, Apex, Holly Springs, Morrisville, Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon and Fuquay-Varina.
During the time, they filed charges for 37 for seat belt violations, one child restraint violation, one for driving while license revoked, one for failure to heed the blue lights, one for assaulting a law enforcement officer, one for resisting officers and two other traffic violations.
Law enforcement personnel participating in the program include area police departments, Sheriff’s offices and the State Highway Patrol.
Other programs which go on year-round are Booze It and Lose it, R U Buckled, No Need 2 Speed and Be Safe Share the Space.
Agencies which participate in the N.C. Governor’s Safety Program are eligible for grants and other incentives.
