Since I was a kid, I’ve always enjoyed well-written stories, interesting characters and fantastical worlds.
Once I found video games, I added their story-lines to my collection of favorite books and movies.
These story-telling mediums have their own unique way of grasping our imagination with colorful characters and lovable companions.
Anyone who has played a role-playing game has their favorite character and story, it’s something that adds flavor to our lives, much like a book or movie might.
With such powerful tools at their disposal, game developers have one of the hardest jobs in my opinion.
Not only do they create the world, the people, the enemies and the story, but they have to color it in. Make it real in front of our eyes.
This can lead to masterpieces for some and hated sequels for others.
While they do create works that will last for years, many flop and turn into a dead-end storyline.
What I am getting at is my personal list of frustrations, or pet peeves, if you will.
One of my biggest annoyances is when stages arereused like an old sock until it falls apart.
The first example that comes to my mind is Dragon Age 2. While I love the story and I eagerly await Inquisition in the fall, the second was a painful experience in many ways.
I was constantly going through the same areas, the idea of exploration was gone and dungeons were copy/pasted in everywhere.
While I enjoyed it, the game wasn’t done with the same grand strokes in the way the first was painted.
Seeing the same basic layout over and over was mind-numbing and made the story less real to me.
I want to see more effort put back into the little things.
For me, the attention to detail will make up for the lack of many other aspects, like length of gameplay or large exploration.
Whether it’s a character’s believable actions or words, or how Skyrim had whole books scattered EVERYWHERE.
Another thing that really makes me upset is when a company starts reusing the same things over and over. I’m looking at you, Call of Duty.
As I have stated, I played Call of Duty all through my high school year. I loved it.
But after the first Black Ops game they all started feeling the same and my interest dropped.
Battlefield, for all its bugs, at least attempted to make fresh gameplay with plenty of customization and map types.
Last but not least, please give us proper end-game gameplay.
Difficulty is easy to fine tune to where your play style is, but what I want is to have a truly special end-game.
Whether it’s super powers or an awesome weapon, there needs to be something epic towards the end to draw me.
If I have everything possible by mid-game I get bored really fast.
Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag did that to me, I had all the weapons I could possibly want by mid-game and combat got boring.
And as much as ship battles were epic, I still had to go scuttle around on land and do the exact same things I had been doing in the first game.
The personal island fortress to customize was cool, but never seemed that important nor fleshed out in any meaningful way.
The short of the matter is I want depth, new ideas and effort put into games if developers expect me to put my hard-earned money down for their games.
